Grammy-nominated vocalist Batalla got her start in the music industry as Leonard Cohen’s backup vocalist, leading to a successful solo career and a friendship that lasted until Cohen’s death in 2016. Batalla was one of the first performers on our stage, in 1998—not long after she released her first solo albums. She has performed on our stage, and conducted student outreach programs, several times, since then. This time, Batalla pays tribute to her mentor — best known for his classic “Hallelujah” — with a new selection of covers and revivals of some of Cohen’s most treasured works as well as personal stories gathered from two decades of touring and recording with one of music’s most prolific visionaries.

Batalla has been featured in films and television, and has taken her unique sound on tour in some of the most prestigious venues around the world. She has also bought her music to some of the poorest communities in the United States. The Los Angeles-born artist has also remained deeply committed to honoring her roots, and sharing with young audiences the beauty of music and the Spanish language. Batalla is the recipient of the United Nation’s Earth Charter Award for “extraordinary devotion to social and economic justice” and the Premio Fronterizo Award for “healing work in the world”. Batalla will lead a Student Outreach program, in conjunction with this performance.

Is Coming to the DeJoria Center
Say hello to CTA ( California Transit Authority). Based in Los Angeles and fueled by the creative passion and pure percussive power of original Chicago drummer Danny Seraphine, CTA is all about a man – and a band – on a mission. And with the release of their landmark sophomore CD, Sacred Ground, CTA accomplishes that mission and a whole lot more. Working side-by-side with acclaimed guitarist Marc Bonilla, whose co-production, playing and co-writing are front-and-center throughout the project, Seraphine throws down the musical gauntlet with a collection of songs that lays a new cornerstone for the jazz/rock genre.

Logan Mize is an accomplished country singer/songwriter from Clearwater, Kansas, who has deep musical roots in his family tree. His great uncle was Billy Mize, largely known for crafting and evolving the legendary Bakersfield sound, which included musical pioneers Merle Haggard and Buck Owens. In 2009, his first self-titled album was released and shortly thereafter, in 2010, Logan signed a publishing deal with Big Yellow Dog Music. In 2012, his second album “Nobody in Nashville” was released, which peaked at #49 on the US Country chart. Over the next five years Logan hit the road and toured the US and UK, attracting and winning over new fans at every stop along the way.

In 2017, his latest album “Come Back Road” was released and debuted in the top 20 Billboard Country Albums and reached no. 2 on the iTunes Country Charts. Propelled by the album’s popularity, “Ain’t Always Pretty,” eclipsed 30 million streams on Spotify in 2018.
